Monthly Music Picks | September

I wanted to start this little series to go though the music I’ve discovered this month, as well as my favourite oldies that I’m still loving. Here are my picks from the last month!

Cardi B | Bodak Yellow

Everyone’s talking up Cardi B at the moment and for good reason. Her single Bodak Yellow is super catchy and her whole style is reminiscent of Nicki Minaj.

DRAM | Cash Machine

DRAM is a new fav of mine recently. His style is very Chance the Rapper and Cash Machine is a great, poppy R&B tune.

FKA Twigs | Two Weeks

I have been listening to ‘Two Weeks’ non-stop lately. FKA Twigs’ voice is so beautiful. Her music is described as ethereal electronic R&B on Spotify and that is the perfect description for it. Other favourites of hers are ‘Ache’, ‘Kicks’ and ‘Video Girl’.

Frank Ocean | Chanel

I’ve loved all the singles Frank Ocean has been releasing lately, especially ‘Chanel’. The lyrics are fantastic and so is the beat.

Run The Jewels | Oh My Darling Don’t Cry

Iv’e been listening to rap duo Run The Jewels a lot recently in preparation to see them later in the year and this song always gets me pumped up. It’s fast paced with a great bass in the background.

SZA | Doves In The Wind

SZA is a new discovery for me this month. I’ve been really into chill R&B music lately and her music is perfect for that. ‘Doves In The Wind’ is a particular favourite of mine because of Kendrick Lamar’s feature. But ‘Drew Barrymore’ and ‘Go Gina’ are other great ones off the album ‘Ctrl’.

Let me know what you guys have been listening to below!

January Favourites

Starboy by The Weeknd

I think I have been listening to this album non-stop since it came out so it definitely had to be in my favourites. I love the RnB beats and his voice is just beautiful! It’s generally quite a mellow album, I love listening to it while I’m driving.

Red Eyeshadow

I recently made an order from Colourpop and purchased a deep red eyeshadow to make a smokey red eye. I was inspired by Lindseyrem‘s ‘wearable dead’ look and have now been wearing the look every time I go out. The eyeshadow itself is very creamy and pigmented and incredibly easy to apply.

Fishnets have recently become very popular and I have loved this trend. I love wearing fishnets with basically anything, I just think it adds a really cool element to your outfit. Particularly if they are an interesting colour!

Y-3 Platforms

I recently purchased some secondhand Y-3 Platform shoes and have fallen in love with them. They are the weirdest and probably the least wearable shoes I own but I was compelled to buy them because of their uniqueness.

DIY Clothes

Years ago I took a fashion class in high school and fell in love with sewing and clothes design. And recently I have gotten back into designing and making some clothes. Buying vintage items and changing them up or designing and making items from scratch has definitely been a favourite activity from this month!

TV: A Series of Unfortunate Events and Jane the Virgin

Two TV series I have finished recently have been A Series of Unfortunate Events and Jane the Virgin. There couldn’t be two more different shows but they both were very entertaining. Neil Patrick Harris killed it as Count Olaf in A Series of Unfortunate Events. I loved the whole look of the show with it’s kind of distorted, dark reality. It really reminded me of the dark style of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Jane the Virgin was just a lighthearted drama/comedy which was really fun to relax to and watch. I particularly liked the telanovela style of the show and Gina Rodriguez is hilarious!

21 Things I’ve Learnt By 21

To celebrate my 21st birthday I thought that I would put together a few things that I have learnt along the way. Enjoy!

  1. Make big moves, even if it seems scary at the time – it might be hard to change something in your life but you’ll thank yourself later for taking the step
  2. Write lists and dates in diary – it’ll quieten the mind without having to think about a million things
  3. Sometimes it helps to write things out – when you get overwhelmed with life things, write down how you feel, it can help a lot
  4. Tell someone when they do something that bothers you – don’t just keep it inside or make excuses for them
  5. You don’t have to deal with everything yourself – this is one I struggled to learn and still struggle with. I always think that I can sort things out by myself and have learnt that it’s ok to let people know you’re struggling with something
  6. You can only control your own actions, let others make their own mistakes
  7. Be mindful of what you say – you never know what someone is going through and you might regret saying something in the heat of the moment
  8. Some people aren’t worth your energy, sometimes you need to walk away no matter how much you want to say something
  9. Accept constructive criticism – don’t take it personally, it will only help you grow
  10. Always be open to new experiences
  11. Don’t say it’s ok when it’s not – it’ll let people know that what they did to you was fine (just thank them for apologising)
  12. Travel and study overseas
  13. Don’t accept double standards
  14. Don’t rely on others to determine your own happiness, confidence or self worth
  15. Do what makes you happy even if others might not think it’s the right thing to do
  16. Don’t stay with someone just for the sake of being with someone/not being alone
  17. Be completely comfortable with yourself before beginning a relationship – be with someone only to add to your life, not complete you
  18. Positive thinking is so important – it can change your life
  19. Surround yourself with people that encourage your natural self and support you
  20. Stand your ground, even if it is with someone ‘above’ you eg. teachers, bosses
  21. Enjoy the now, don’t just plan for the future

I have so much more to learn and experience – I can’t wait for what comes next!

11 Tips You Need To Know Before Going To A Music Festival

It’s festival season finally! I am so excited for all the summer festivals coming up in Australia so I’ve put together a few of my festival tips which will hopefully help all you festival-goers out!

Comfortable shoes are a must

You are going to be on your feet all day and you don’t want to miss out because you had to sit down. Bring comfortable, preferably flat shoes that you don’t mind getting ruined/lost. The most important thing is that they are closed toe – you don’t want people stepping on your exposed toes in the mosh. And if it’s muddy, wear runners or gumboots. And bring at least 1 back up pair just in case!

Bring a light jacket

Bringing a light jacket or jumper that you can fit in your bag will be your lifesaver for the cooler nights. You don’t want to be freezing and miserable so bringing a back-up will help you out. Worst case scenario if you get cold, get into the mosh and you’ll warm up quickly!

Hat and sunglasses are essential

In the hot Australian sun you would be stupid to go to an all day festival without some sort of sun protection. You can even incorporate your protection into your outfit so you look good and are being sun smart at the same time.

When you get to your camping space, mark your territory

You most likely won’t have much room so when you are assigned your area, make sure you spread out and use it all or someone next to you will take your space!

Comfy but cute

This is always my go-to when figuring out what I’m wearing for festivals. You need to dress strategically because there is no point looking good if all you want is to get it off or have to keep readjusting every 10 minutes. Just remember, you are there to enjoy the music, your friends, and anything else the festival has to offer and if you’re comfortable, you’ll be able to enjoy yourself all day and night.

Bring portable chargers

If you’re like me, you will want to have your phone charged for the festival. So I recommend investing in a portable charger so you can be contactable during your time in the festival.

Plan your outfits before you go

Preparation is key with festival outfits. Not only will you know it will look good because you pre-planned it, you won’t be packing a bunch of unnecessary clothes. You don’t want to be sorting outfits out in your tent! Bring 1 different option for unexpected weather and you’re set!

Go light on the makeup

Wear makeup you know will look good after a day of sweating/rain/dust/dirt etc. and is easy to apply – especially if you’re camping, you don’t want to be doing a full face of makeup. I usually stick to face powder as my base and make it look nicer and more festival with eyeliner and glitter.

Take a bag that’s easy to hold

When you’re at the festival, you’ll need somewhere to hold all your stuff. Avoid really chunky bags or clutches you need to hold all day. I recommend a small, flat backpack, cross body bag or even a bumbag to keep all your essentials in.

Only pack non-perishable food

I know you will want to save money on food and not buy everything at the festival but you can only pack so much in eskis etc. If you are camping out in the middle of summer, pack sealed snack foods like biscuits or chips and plan to buy main meals.

You can shower!

People say that you can’t or won’t shower at festivals but keeping good hygiene is so important and not actually that hard! First of all, most, if not all, festival sites have showers for you to use. Yes, they might not be the best showers ever but at least you’ll be clean. And if your campsite is near a beach, go for a swim and shower at the beach showers! Don’t resort to the so-called ‘babywipe showers’.

Above all, just enjoy yourselves and be safe!

My Current Wishlist

I am forever clicking onto all my favourite online stores to see what I might want and to get some inspiration for my existing wardrobe. Window shopping online is one of my favourite pastimes when I’m watching TV or procrastinating, so I thought I’d put together a little list of things that I currently want!

When I first saw this little see-through Bud Slip dress, all I could think of was ‘festival’. It is so delicate and beautiful and I can imaging layering it with so many things for all sorts of different looks!

Chiara Ferragni

Not only is Chiara Ferragni an amazing blogger, but her collection is flawless as well! These patent leather thigh-high boots ‘Flirting’ with her signature eye on the side are everything to me. From the first moment I saw them I was completely obsessed. If it wasn’t for the price tag of €561 ($828 AUD) I would have bought these a long time ago! But staring at them longingly is good enough for now!

Discount Universe

This limited edition Discount Universe For Life Tee caught my eye as I was browsing through their online store. I love their style but think it is hard to wear on a regular basis (sequins + large graphics + profanities = inappropriate for everyday wear) so I really loved this sweater’s toned down (in comparison with the rest of their stock) colour and design while maintaining a cool DU vibe.

Lazy Oaf

I love menswear as I love to wear everything oversized. These pieces (Not Now Hoodie and Inactive T-Shirt) from Lazy Oaf are the epitome of comfort with cute little graphics and writing – I’m in love! Unfortunately, they are currently sold out; fingers crossed they will be restocked!

These classic Dior So Real Sunglasses in Bleu Marine and Pink Gold sunglasses have been replicated over and over for the past year or so but nothing can beat the original! I am in love with the rose gold and navy combination and while these have been on my wishlist for a very long time, they might have to stay there just a bit longer!

Last but definitely not least is this beautiful Reformation dress. I found this beauty on my hunt for a birthday dress and fell in love with the colour, silkiness and unique shape. It is definitely in the running for my birthday outfit!

Happy window shopping!

September Favourites

Laura Mercier

I have been on the hunt for a super light coverage foundation to wear when I want a bit more coverage than just my daily powder and I have finally found the perfect one! I am absolutely in love with my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser – Oil Free. It literally feels like nothing on the skin (I hate feeling like I’m wearing makeup), makes your skin look beautiful and is very long lasting!

I bought the Translucent Loose Setting Powder at the same time and while it took some getting used to, I now love it. I learnt through trial and error that only the slightest amount of powder is necessary otherwise it leaves a white cast!

Allday Concert and Jumper

Allday is an amazing Australian rapper and one of my all time favourite artists. He toured this month and it was phenomenal! I saw him earlier this year at a festival where he had a shorter set so it was great to see him doing a full length show. Not only was his concert amazing, I bought his tour sweatshirt which is the most comfortable jumper of my life and I have been wearing it non-stop. And to top it all off, my friends and I ran into him outside after the show!

Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid by Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord have release a lot of new music in the past few months with their mixtape Suck On This being released in May and 4th album Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid released in September. Their new album has to be the weirdest of them all and I’m loving it! I definitely get freak show vibes with songs like Rats Rule and many songs have an American sound, with influences coming from living in LA and working with DJ Muggs from Cyprus Hill. I have loved listening to this album from start to finish many times!

TV: American Horror Story and Scream Queens

Two of my favourite TV shows are finally back on! Season 6 of American Horror Story is shaping up to be a really good one, I was hooked after the first episode! If you like really good horror/thriller/suspense shows, AHS is for you!

Scream Queens on the other hand is more of a comedy/horror show. This season features actors like John Stamos and Taylor Lautner, joining an already fabulous cast for a killer season, now set in a hospital.

I have been crazy about mesh anything for a couple months now and I have worn these two latest purchases all month and I’m still loving them. Again, they are from my favourite brand The Ragged Priest. I feel like I never stop talking about them but I can’t help it!

How To Look Cool In Winter

Winter is just winding down in Melbourne but for everyone in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s just around the corner. So here are my tips to looking cool in Winter!

Layer, layer, layer

Laying jumpers over each other, like a turtleneck, means that you can wear some of your lighter jumpers all through the year. I also like to layer t-shirts over jumpers on the slightly warmer days to change up my look.

Don’t forgot colours still exist

Melbourne in Winter can look like a sea of black but don’t forget that colours still exist! Adding a brighter coloured jumper, skirt or jacket can make your outfit feel a bit more fun.

Hat it up

I love adding hats and beanies to my winter looks to add something different to my outfit. My favourite thing to do it pair a brighter coloured beanie with a black or neutral outfit for a ‘street’ look.

Fleece stockings

I love wearing skirts and dresses all year round and with a good pair of stockings you can still wear all of your favourite pieces. My number one pick are fleece-lined stockings. They are so warm you feel like you’re wearing pants!

Mix up the jackets

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with that one warm black jacket you own. But try to mix it up a bit and bring in other season’s jackets. You might think it’s too cold to be wearing a thinner jacket but paired with a warm woollen jumper and a big scarf or cape, you’ll be toasty warm and super stylish.

Hopefully this gives all of you in the Northern Hemisphere going into Winter some ideas!
